ANALYSIS: There are very few Division I teams, if any, that are as bad as Delaware State is this year. Ranked second from the bottom overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 6-25. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 12) in the MEAC (average ranking 324.7). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.288 (which ranks seventh from the bottom nationally), Delaware State has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
Delaware State has a very tough time coming by points on offense. Scoring about 82 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are woefully ranked #353 in offensive efficiency. Delaware State is downright awful shooting the basketball and can't hit from anywhere, shamefully ranking in the bottom-25 in each of the four major field goal shooting categories. They make just 28.1% of their three-pointers (ranking third from the bottom nationally), 27.5% of their mid-range attempts (last), 47.6% of their near-proximity chances (last), and 33.6% of their total shots from the field (last) vs. AO. Delaware State also does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 19.75 vs. AO, they are 337th in the overall rankings for that category. If Delaware State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully get off shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of 87.61 vs. AO, which ranks #23 in college basketball.
Delaware State doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 114 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #337 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Delaware State allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 37.2% of their three-pointers (309th in the nation), 66.6% of their near-proximity attempts (340th), and 47.6% of their total shots from the field (317th). Delaware State also fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 31.15 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #336 in the country in that category.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that tend to get off more shots, Delaware State usually performs worse than average. Delaware State is more efficient than normal 26% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.72. In all other contests, Delaware State performs better than average 80% of the time.
Delaware State is typically better vs. teams that prefer the outside shot. Against foes that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.96, Delaware State performs above their norm 60% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 11% of the time.
When facing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, Delaware State often performs worse than normal. In their other contests, Delaware State performs better than the norm 65% of the time.
