ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Dayton has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They have a record of 22-12 and are ranked 72nd overall (out of 363) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 15 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 154.6), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
Dayton has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #45 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings and preferring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 17th-slowest pace in D1), they will allow about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Dayton does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank ninth in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 29.4% of their attempts from afar. Dayton is also a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.28 vs. AO, they are currently rated 19th in the country in that category. If Dayton does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.96 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 18th-worst in college basketball.
Dayton is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 101st nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 107 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Dayton is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 14th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 66.0% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Dayton has also been fairly successful when shooting from the field. The squad is ranked 51st in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 46.4% of their attempts vs. AO.
Dayton has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 335th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Dayton often performs better than normal. Dayton is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.09%. In their other contests, Dayton performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
Dayton does better vs. clubs that do not defend well on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.48%, Dayton performs above average 54% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
Dayton performs worse against squads that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.18%, Dayton is more efficient than normal 20% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 54% of the time.
