ANALYSIS: Dayton is one of the most elite and successful teams in college basketball this year. Carrying a record of 29-2, they are currently rated #9 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 14) in the A-10 (average ranking 135.3).
Dayton showcases one of the country's most efficient offenses. Racking up about 114 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the team is nationally rated fifth in efficiency on that end of the floor. Dayton is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. They make 37.2% of their three-pointers (22nd in the nation), 42.9% of their mid-range jumpers (seventh), 73.2% of their near-proximity chances (first), and 51.9% of their total shots from the field (first) vs. AO. Dayton also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.15, which ranks #36 in the country. If Dayton does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.27 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 20th-worst in college hoops.
Dayton plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 30th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Dayton does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 25th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.7% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (36.0%) will be from mid-range. Dayton has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #67 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.0% of their total attempts from the floor.
Dayton is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 13th in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Dayton does worse vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.31, Dayton performs above average 27% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 89% of the time.
Dayton performs worse against squads that allow more chances at the line. When facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.95, Dayton is more efficient than normal 17% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 63% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Dayton usually performs worse than average. Dayton is more efficient than normal 32% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.55%. In all other contests, Dayton performs better than average 78% of the time.
