ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Davidson should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Ranked 131st overall (out of 362) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 15-17. Of the 15 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 121.2), they're currently ranked as our #10 team in the conference.
Davidson has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #98 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 101 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Davidson owns a pretty good track record against teams that shoot the three. They rank 70th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 32.4% of their attempts from afar.
Davidson is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 163rd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 106 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Davidson makes an effort to get off shots from the inside more so than the perimeter. The ball-club is 76th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 59.7% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. If Davidson does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of just 3.6% vs. AO, which ranks 24th-worst in the nation.
Davidson is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 12th in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Davidson does better vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.11%, Davidson performs above average 89% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
Davidson performs better against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.70%, Davidson is more efficient than normal 70% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Davidson usually performs better than average. Davidson is more efficient than normal 79% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.57%. In all other contests, Davidson performs better than average 31% of the time.
