ANALYSIS: Davidson has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. Ranked 85th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 24-10. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 158.5), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
Davidson has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #70 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 98 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Davidson has had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #65 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.6% of their total attempts from the floor. If Davidson does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 8.28 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 25th-worst in the college game.
Davidson plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 104th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 107 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Davidson allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.00, which ranks #18 in the country. Davidson also lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks 18th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to shoot from long, they have the ability to punish you for it, too. Ranked in the top-100 in three-point shooting percentage, they make approximately 36.0% of their three-point attempts vs. AO. If Davidson does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of just 4.5% vs. AO, which ranks 35th-worst in the nation.
When playing on the road, Davidson performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 313th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Davidson does better vs. clubs that allow more chances at the line. When playing squads that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.83, Davidson performs above average 75% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
Davidson performs worse against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 103.64, Davidson is more efficient than normal 33% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 72% of the time.
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Davidson usually performs worse than average. Davidson is more efficient than normal 30% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 15.34. In all other contests, Davidson performs better than average 65% of the time.
