ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, Oregon State is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Ranked 92nd overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 17-14. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 81.1).
While favoring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 19th-slowest pace in D1), the primary strength for Oregon State is defense. The team is ranked 28th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 92 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Oregon State will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.7% of their three-pointers (18th in the nation), 31.1% of their mid-range shots (23rd), 52.6% of their near-proximity attempts (27th), and 37.9% of their total shots from the field (12th). Oregon State also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 16th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 13.04, they're 34th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
Unfortunately, Oregon State is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 228th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 97 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Oregon State doesn't quite measure up to the rest of the field in scoring points off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 5.6% of all second-chance opportunities (272nd nationally).
Oregon State has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 332nd in positive momentum. On the road, Oregon State performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked third from the bottom in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Oregon State does better vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.92, Oregon State performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
Oregon State performs better against squads that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.17%, Oregon State is more efficient than normal 67% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to get off more shots, Oregon State usually performs worse than average. Oregon State is more efficient than normal 25% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.67. In all other contests, Oregon State performs better than average 64% of the time.
