ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Cincinnati, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. Carrying a record of 12-11, they are currently rated #136 overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 11 schools in the AAC (average ranking 118.8), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, Cincinnati will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 98 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #136 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Cincinnati has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 21st in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 77.06 vs. AO. Cincinnati will also look to secure a relatively healthy number of easy scoring opportunities off of steals. They're ranked 60th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.23.
Cincinnati plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 173rd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Cincinnati will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 17th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 58.9% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. If Cincinnati does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 64.8% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 32nd-worst in Division I.
Cincinnati is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 26th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Cincinnati often performs better than normal. Cincinnati is more efficient than usual 80% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.77%. In their other contests, Cincinnati performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
Cincinnati does better vs. clubs that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.08, Cincinnati performs above average 71% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 22% of the time.
Cincinnati performs worse against squads that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.09, Cincinnati is more efficient than normal 22% of the time.
