ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Canisius likely fits the bill. They have a record of 11-21 and are ranked 270th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 11 schools in the MAAC (average ranking 203.3), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Canisius is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #279 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Canisius has a hard time converting field goals attempts on offense. The team is rated #326 in the country in field goal percentage, making good on a meager 39.9% of their attempts vs. AO. Canisius is also one of the more deficient teams in the nation as it pertains to scoring off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.4% of all second-chance opportunities (324th nationally).
Canisius doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #239 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Canisius fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked 348th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 65.1% of their attempts from close-up. And with such little resistance, AO will merrily cut, slash, and drive right to the hoop as often as possible. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (38.5%) will be from short-distance. Canisius also allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #312 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 46.6% of their total attempts from the floor. If Canisius does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 10.67 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 37th-best in college hoops.
Canisius is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 21st in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that prefer the outside shot, Canisius often performs worse than normal. Canisius is more efficient than usual 42% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00. In their other contests, Canisius performs better than the norm 100% of the time.
Canisius does better vs. clubs that effectively clean the offensive glass. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 11.06, Canisius performs above average 77% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
Canisius performs better against squads that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 3.87%, Canisius is more efficient than normal 77% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 33% of the time.
