ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Canisius should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Haslametrics has them ranked 187th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 18-16. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 11) in the MAAC (average ranking 203.1).
If there is a strength for Canisius this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 118th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Canisius will likely shoot a fair share of three-pointers each contest. The team ranks 52nd in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 36.5% from beyond the arc vs. AO. If Canisius does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of only 23.69 vs. AO, which ranks 42nd-worst in the country.
Unfortunately, Canisius is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 279th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 108 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Canisius allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They are exceptionally deficient defending inside the three-point line, allowing AO to make good on 40.8% of their mid-range jumpers (329th in the nation), 67.4% of their near-proximity chances (332nd), and 49.6% of their total shots from the field (tenth from the bottom). Canisius is also one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 9.0% of all second-chance opportunities (333rd nationally).
Canisius is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked fourth in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict. On the road, Canisius performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 33rd in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Canisius usually performs better than average. Canisius is more efficient than normal 78% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 97.97. In all other contests, Canisius performs better than average 25% of the time.
Canisius is typically better vs. teams that shoot the ball well from the field. Against foes that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.98%, Canisius performs above their norm 70% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 18% of the time.
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Canisius often performs worse than normal. Canisius is more efficient than usual 23% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.90%. In their other contests, Canisius performs better than the norm 71% of the time.
