ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, Campbell isn't a very good team this year. Carrying a record of 20-13, they are currently rated #177 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 11 schools in the Big South (average ranking 213.3), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Campbell this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 138th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Campbell lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks 22nd in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 34.1% from beyond the arc vs. AO. Campbell also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 76.3% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 26th nationally in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, with a free throw attempt rate of just 24.08 vs. AO, they don't provide themselves a whole lot of opportunities at the foul line. If Campbell does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of just 4.5% vs. AO, which ranks 38th-worst in the nation.
The defense for Campbell, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 259th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 108 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Campbell allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are exceptionally deficient defending inside the three-point line, allowing AO to make good on 39.8% of their mid-range jumpers (317th in the nation), 65.3% of their near-proximity chances (319th), and 47.2% of their total shots from the field (305th). Campbell also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 7.5% of all second-chance opportunities (313th nationally). If Campbell does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 79.87 vs. AO, which ranks 39th-best in college basketball.
Campbell is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 38th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Campbell performs worse against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 63.97%, Campbell is more efficient than normal 25% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 72% of the time.
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Campbell usually performs worse than average. Campbell is more efficient than normal 43% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 23.20. In all other contests, Campbell performs better than average 78% of the time.
