ANALYSIS:
Butler is one of the teams in the upper echelon of college basketball this year. Ranked 28th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 22-9. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 10) in the Big East (average ranking 45.4).

Utilizing a style of play that will try to grind things to a crawl (the ninth-slowest pace in D1), Butler succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 28th in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 108 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Butler is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 41.7% of their mid-range jumpers (20th in the nation), 63.4% of their near-proximity chances (42nd), and 47.3% of their total shots from the field (18th) vs. AO. Butler also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.95, which ranks #26 in the country.

Butler plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 34th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Butler does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked first in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 28.7% of their attempts from that distance. Butler is also one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #21 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.0% of their total attempts from the floor. If Butler does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.94 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 23rd-worst in the college game.

Butler has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 329th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, Butler performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 304th in our site's away-from-home metric.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, Butler often performs worse than normal. Butler is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.01%. In their other contests, Butler performs better than the norm 77% of the time.
Butler does worse vs. clubs that favor a faster tempo. When playing squads that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.33, Butler performs above average 52% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 90% of the time.
