ANALYSIS: Despite their unexceptional win percentage, Butler should be regarded as one of the better teams in college hoops. Carrying a record of 21-14, they are currently rated #15 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Big East (average ranking 44.2), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.749 (the 17th-highest in the country), Butler has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Butler is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated 15th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 114 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Butler allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 7.70, which ranks #4 in the country. Butler is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.2% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked tenth nationally in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, with a free throw attempt rate of just 24.00 vs. AO, they don't provide themselves a whole lot of opportunities at the foul line. Butler is lastly an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 40.7% of their mid-range jumpers (42nd in the nation), 66.2% of their near-proximity chances (27th), and 49.0% of their total shots from the field (20th) vs. AO.
Butler plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 28th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 94 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Butler does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 11th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 11.45, they're 13th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Butler also has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 22nd in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 77.21 vs. AO.
On the road, Butler performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 341st in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Butler is typically worse vs. teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. Against foes that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.18, Butler performs above their norm 30% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 67% of the time.
When facing teams that prefer the outside shot, Butler often performs better than normal. Butler is more efficient than usual 67% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.06. In their other contests, Butler performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
Butler does worse vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 8.24%, Butler performs above average 21% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 57% of the time.
