ANALYSIS: Despite having one of the better win percentages in Division I, Oral Roberts doesn't quite make it into our list of college basketball's best 25 teams. They are ranked #61 (out of 363) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 30-5. Of the 10 schools in the Summit League (average ranking 241.7), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Oral Roberts showcases one of the country's most efficient offenses. Racking up about 113 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the team is nationally rated 25th in efficiency on that end of the floor. Oral Roberts lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks fifth in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to shoot from long, they have the ability to punish you for it, too. Ranked in the top-100 in three-point shooting percentage, they make approximately 35.8% of their three-point attempts vs. AO. Oral Roberts is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.3% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 13th nationally in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, with a free throw attempt rate of just 22.47 vs. AO, they don't provide themselves a whole lot of opportunities at the foul line. Oral Roberts is lastly superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 22nd nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 42.5% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO.
Oral Roberts is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 110th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Oral Roberts is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 18.36 vs. AO, they are currently rated fourth in the country in that category. Oral Roberts is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 41st in the NCAA). If Oral Roberts does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 89.60 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks ninth-worst in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Oral Roberts usually performs better than average. Oral Roberts is more efficient than normal 63% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.47%. In all other contests, Oral Roberts performs better than average 8% of the time.
Oral Roberts is typically better vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 9.96, Oral Roberts performs above their norm 57% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 10% of the time.
When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Oral Roberts often performs worse than normal. Oral Roberts is more efficient than usual 11% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.25. In their other contests, Oral Roberts performs better than the norm 55% of the time.
