ANALYSIS: This website places Belmont in the top 25% of all NCAA college basketball teams this year. Their record this season is 24-9, and the club is ranked 78th overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 12) in the OVC (average ranking 219.8).
Belmont has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #46 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 111 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Belmont lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks second in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to shoot from long, they have the ability to punish you for it, too. Ranked in the top-75 in three-point shooting percentage, they make approximately 37.6% of their three-point attempts vs. AO. Belmont also has the potential to make you pay if you let them get close to the rim. The team is ranked 32nd in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 65.5% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. The squad likewise lands in the top-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage and makes good on about 47.6% of their total attempts vs. AO. If Belmont does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of only 20.71 vs. AO, which ranks 16th-worst in the country.
Though they're not quite as efficient defensively as they are offensively, Belmont still does OK when the opposition has possession of the ball. The team ranks 147th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Belmont does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.15 vs. AO, they are currently rated 37th in the country in that category. Belmont is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 5.5% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 43rd in the NCAA). If Belmont does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 8.39 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 48th-worst in the college game.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, Belmont often performs better than normal. Belmont is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.07%. In their other contests, Belmont performs better than the norm 8% of the time.
Belmont does better vs. clubs that are typically efficient on offense. When playing squads that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 99.28, Belmont performs above average 77% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
