ANALYSIS:
As an average to slightly above-average foe, Ball State should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Carrying a record of 18-13, they are currently rated #113 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 12 schools in the MAC (average ranking 166.6), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.

Ball State has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #53 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 92 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Ball State has done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 29th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 53.0% of their attempts from close-up. And to capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from the inside more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (38.9%) will be from short-distance. Ball State has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #66 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.0% of their total attempts from the floor.

Unfortunately, Ball State is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 211th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 97 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Ball State is one of the more deficient teams in the nation as it pertains to scoring off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.5% of all second-chance opportunities (324th nationally).

Ball State has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked second from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that convert well from the charity stripe, Ball State usually performs worse than average. Ball State is more efficient than normal 22% of the time when facing clubs that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.69%. In all other contests, Ball State performs better than average 75% of the time.
Ball State is typically better vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.30, Ball State performs above their norm 60% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 10% of the time.
When facing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, Ball State often performs better than normal. Ball State is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.39%. In their other contests, Ball State performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
