ANALYSIS: If you see Ball State on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. Ranked 256th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 7-23. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 12) in the MAC (average ranking 147.5).
Ball State is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #261 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Ball State tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.60, which ranks 339th in D1.
Ball State doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #221 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Ball State fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked 333rd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 65.4% of their attempts from close-up. Ball State also allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #311 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 46.6% of their total attempts from the floor. If Ball State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 11.51 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks fifth-best in college hoops.
Ball State has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 340th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. On the road, Ball State performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 28th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Ball State is typically worse vs. teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. Against foes that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.24%, Ball State performs above their norm 11% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 55% of the time.
When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Ball State often performs better than normal. Ball State is more efficient than usual 67% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.85. In their other contests, Ball State performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
