ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Air Force, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. Their record this season is 14-18, and the club is ranked 137th overall (out of 363) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 11 schools in the MWC (average ranking 85.3), they're currently ranked as our #10 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Air Force this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. While favoring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 16th-slowest pace in D1), the team is rated 141st in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Air Force is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 20th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 65.5% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Air Force will also make a concerted effort to fire off quite a few three-pointers each game. The team ranks 34th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 34.9% from beyond the arc vs. AO. If Air Force does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of just 2.9% vs. AO, which ranks fifth-worst in the nation.
Air Force is not quite as good on the defensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 184th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Air Force does a pretty inadequate job to provide chances for themselves to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #331 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.73 vs. AO. If Air Force does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to hinder opponents from sinking threes. AO will convert only 30.0% of their three-point attempts, and the team ranks 15th-best in the NCAA in that category because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Air Force does better vs. clubs that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00, Air Force performs above average 70% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 17% of the time.
Air Force performs better against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 11.60, Air Force is more efficient than normal 80% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 36% of the time.
When playing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Air Force usually performs better than average. Air Force is more efficient than normal 64% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 56.33%. In all other contests, Air Force performs better than average 20% of the time.
