ANALYSIS: If you see Air Force on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. Carrying a record of 12-21, they are currently rated #218 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #10 team (out of 11) in the MWC (average ranking 131.3).
Air Force does not have a terribly exceptional defense this year. Rated at #246 in defensive efficiency, they allow around 106 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Air Force fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked 340th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 68.4% of their attempts from close-up. On a positive note, AO will take nowhere near as many inside shots as they typically would and, as a result, only 26.3% of AO's field goal attempts will come from short-distance. Air Force also performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 330th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 40.9% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. If Air Force does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.57 vs. AO, which ranks 32nd-best in the country.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Air Force still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 101 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #177 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Air Force poses no threat whatsoever to grab rebounds off their own misses. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 10.15 in potential points scored off of second chances (335th nationally), and they convert just 4.9% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 317th) as well. Air Force is also one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 306th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 78.59 vs. AO.
Air Force has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 318th in the country in positive momentum. Air Force has also been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 312th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, Air Force performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 321st in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Air Force is typically better vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.49%, Air Force performs above their norm 68% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 22% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Air Force often performs better than normal. Air Force is more efficient than usual 79% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.48%. In their other contests, Air Force performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
Air Force does better vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.42%, Air Force performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 43% of the time.
