ANALYSIS: Abil. Christian has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. They are ranked #75 (out of 357) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 24-5. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 13) in the Southland (average ranking 267.5).
Abil. Christian will suffocate most opponents with its stifling defense. Allowing roughly 90 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, this squad is rated #21 in defensive efficiency. Abil. Christian has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked second in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 73.69 vs. AO. Abil. Christian has also done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 40th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.2% of their attempts from afar.
Though they're not quite as efficient offensively as they are defensively, Abil. Christian still does OK when they have possession of the ball. The team ranks 152nd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Abil. Christian will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 14th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. Curiously enough, though they shoot a fair amount of field goals from the inside, they don't really make a whole bunch of them, converting only 55.7% of their near-proximity attempts vs. AO. Abil. Christian has also established itself as a team that cleans the offensive glass quite well. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 15.57 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 50th in the NCAA). If Abil. Christian does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to drain mid-range jumpers. The squad makes just 33.9% of their mid-range field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 48th-worst in the nation.
Abil. Christian has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 318th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. On the road, Abil. Christian performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 339th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Abil. Christian performs worse against squads that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 79.31, Abil. Christian is more efficient than normal 35% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Abil. Christian usually performs worse than average. Abil. Christian is more efficient than normal 25% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.84. In all other contests, Abil. Christian performs better than average 59% of the time.
Abil. Christian is typically worse vs. teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.31%, Abil. Christian performs above their norm 25% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 59% of the time.
