ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Syracuse is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Their record this season is 16-17, and the club is ranked 65th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 82.1), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Syracuse is one of the very most competent offensive teams in the country. Ranked 17th in offensive efficiency, they'll rack up more than 112 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Syracuse is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 38.0% of their three-pointers (13th in the nation), 41.7% of their mid-range chances (33rd), and 46.4% of their total shots from the field (48th) vs. AO. Syracuse also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 38th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.01 vs. AO.
Though they're not quite as efficient defensively as they are offensively, Syracuse still does OK when the opposition has possession of the ball. The team ranks 175th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Syracuse does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.87 vs. AO, they are currently rated 35th in the country in that category. Syracuse also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #45 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.4% of their total attempts from the floor. If Syracuse does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.94 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 13th-worst in college basketball.
Syracuse has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 325th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Syracuse performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.08%, Syracuse is more efficient than normal 68% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 18% of the time.
When playing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, Syracuse usually performs worse than average. Syracuse is more efficient than normal 35% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.22%. In all other contests, Syracuse performs better than average 77% of the time.
Syracuse is typically better vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 21.42, Syracuse performs above their norm 64% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
