ANALYSIS: Syracuse has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Their record this season is 18-10, and the club is ranked 35th overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 71.7), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Syracuse this year is offense. The team is ranked 29th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 110 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Syracuse is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked seventh in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 68.4% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. However, considering their success when shooting from the inside, this team is oddly much more likely to shoot from long-distance. Only 25.4% of the team's field goal attempts vs. AO are from up-close (the seventh-lowest percentage nationally). Syracuse is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.1% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 18th nationally in free throw percentage.
Syracuse plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 68th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 94 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Syracuse is one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #11 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.1% of their total attempts from the floor. Syracuse also does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 20th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.3% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, this team will force AO to shoot the three more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (44.5%) will come from long-distance. Syracuse is lastly a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.72 vs. AO, they are currently rated 21st in the country in that category. If Syracuse does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 86.73 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 22nd-worst in college basketball.
Syracuse has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked 12th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Syracuse performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.41%, Syracuse is more efficient than normal 53% of the time. In their other contests, the team is never more efficient than the norm.
When playing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Syracuse usually performs better than average. Syracuse is more efficient than normal 64% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.22%. In all other contests, Syracuse performs better than average 18% of the time.
Syracuse is typically worse vs. teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.12%, Syracuse performs above their norm 10% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 50% of the time.
