ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Cornell should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Ranked 189th overall (out of 358) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 15-11. Of the eight schools in the Ivy League (average ranking 208.5), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Cornell this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. While favoring one of the game's most blistering paces (the fourth-fastest in D1), the team is rated 161st in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cornell lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks eighth in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 34.0% from beyond the arc vs. AO. Cornell also does fairly solid work converting shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 63rd nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 40.5% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. If Cornell does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 8.79 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks ninth-worst in college hoops.
Cornell is not quite as good on the defensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 208th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 102 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cornell performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 334th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 42.7% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Cornell also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 6.5% of all second-chance opportunities (329th nationally).
Cornell is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 25th in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Cornell usually performs worse than average. Cornell is more efficient than normal 33% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.64%. In all other contests, Cornell performs better than average 73% of the time.
