ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Cornell should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Ranked 259th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 12-16. Of the eight schools in the Ivy League (average ranking 202.8), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Cornell this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 174th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cornell is superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 14th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 42.7% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. However, even with their high conversion rate on mid-range attempts, this team usually settles for shots from other spots on the floor. Only about 24.5% of their overall attempts vs. AO are from those in-between locations. Cornell also converts a fair amount of its free throws. Making 74.5% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 75th nationally in free throw percentage. If Cornell does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of just 4.7% vs. AO, which ranks 30th-worst in the nation.
Unfortunately, Cornell is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 326th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 112 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cornell allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked seventh from the bottom in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.64 vs. AO. Cornell also does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank seventh from the bottom nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 40.6% of their attempts from afar. Cornell lastly gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 17.79 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (338th nationally).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Cornell usually performs better than average. Cornell is more efficient than normal 83% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 46.10%. In all other contests, Cornell performs better than average 40% of the time.
Cornell is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 70.67%, Cornell performs above their norm 47% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 88% of the time.
When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Cornell often performs worse than normal. Cornell is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 101.76. In their other contests, Cornell performs better than the norm 72% of the time.
