ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, New Mexico St. should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Ranked 112th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 23-11. Of the eight schools in the WAC (average ranking 233.3), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
New Mexico St. has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #52 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 96 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. New Mexico St. is one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 5.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 35th in the NCAA). New Mexico St. also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #36 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.2% of their total attempts from the floor. If New Mexico St. does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 6.72 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks fifth-worst in the college game.
The offense for New Mexico St., on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 176th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. New Mexico St. isn't performing well from the free throw line this season. Converting just 67.0% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #285 overall in free throw percentage. If New Mexico St. does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 18.26 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 33rd in all of college hoops.
New Mexico St. has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #29 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
New Mexico St. does better vs. clubs that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.96%, New Mexico St. performs above average 91% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
New Mexico St. performs better against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 104.90, New Mexico St. is more efficient than normal 85% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 32% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter, New Mexico St. usually performs worse than average. New Mexico St. is more efficient than normal 29% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.03.
