ANALYSIS: Rutgers has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Ranked 40th overall (out of 363) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 19-15. They are also ranked by this site as the #9 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 56.1).
Rutgers has been magnificent on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated fifth in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Rutgers will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.0% of their three-pointers (14th in the nation), 34.7% of their mid-range shots (45th), 53.7% of their near-proximity attempts (30th), and 38.7% of their total shots from the field (ninth). Rutgers also does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 33rd in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.25.
Though they're not quite as efficient offensively as they are defensively, Rutgers still does OK when they have possession of the ball. The team ranks 150th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 104 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Rutgers does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 8.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked seventh nationally), and with a rating of 18.45, they're tenth in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. Rutgers is also fairly competent protecting the ball on offense, which minimizes opportunities for the opponent to score quickly off of steals. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.15, which ranks #56 in the country.
When playing on the road, Rutgers performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 324th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Rutgers is typically worse vs. teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.23%, Rutgers performs above their norm 32% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 83% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Rutgers often performs worse than normal. Rutgers is more efficient than usual 35% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.18. In their other contests, Rutgers performs better than the norm 82% of the time.
Rutgers does better vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.62%, Rutgers performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
