ANALYSIS: Rutgers is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. Ranked 89th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 14-17. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.2).
The primary strength for Rutgers is defense. The team is ranked 77th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Rutgers has done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 30th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 53.7% of their attempts from close-up. Rutgers is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 36th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 11.97, they're 47th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
Rutgers plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 125th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 106 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Rutgers is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 22nd in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.63 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 44.0% of them vs. AO. Rutgers has also established itself as a team that cleans the offensive glass quite well. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 16.49 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 41st in the NCAA). If Rutgers does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 64.3% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 13th-worst in Division I.
Rutgers has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 317th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
