ANALYSIS: If you see Princeton on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. Ranked 178th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 16-12. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of eight) in the Ivy League (average ranking 158.3).
If there is a strength for Princeton this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 123rd in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Princeton has done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 46th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 32.2% of their attempts from afar. For this reason, AO takes nowhere near as many threes as they typically would -- just 34.7% of AO's field goal attempts will be from downtown. Princeton has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 60th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.8% of their attempts from close-up. If Princeton does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's troubles stopping opponents from converting mid-range jumpers. AO will make good on 40.5% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the squad ranks 26th-worst in that category because of it.
The offense for Princeton, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 255th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Princeton is downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked 338th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 30.5% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. Princeton also does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 4.1% of all second-chance opportunities (337th nationally). If Princeton does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 75.2% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #47 in Division I.
Princeton is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 47th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. When playing on the road, Princeton has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 16th in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Princeton performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 70.25%, Princeton is more efficient than normal 24% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 89% of the time.
When playing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Princeton usually performs worse than average. Princeton is more efficient than normal 17% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 12.56. In all other contests, Princeton performs better than average 71% of the time.
Princeton is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from outside the arc. Against foes that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.81%, Princeton performs above their norm 11% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 65% of the time.
