ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, UNH isn't a very good team this year. Ranked 186th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 20-12. Of the nine schools in the America East (average ranking 226.4), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for UNH this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 140th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. UNH owns a pretty good track record against teams that shoot the three. They rank 51st in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 32.7% of their attempts from afar. UNH also does an adequate job to prevent opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 5.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 63rd in the NCAA). If UNH does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.17 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks ninth-worst in the college game.
UNH is not quite as good on the offensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 190th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 100 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UNH does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 4.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ninth from the bottom nationally).
UNH has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 327th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. On the road, UNH performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 47th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, UNH often performs better than normal. UNH is more efficient than usual 67% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.34%. In their other contests, UNH performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
UNH does better vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.35%, UNH performs above average 71% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
UNH performs better against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 106.21, UNH is more efficient than normal 71% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 33% of the time.
