ANALYSIS: Dartmouth has a squad that most likely falls somewhere in the bottom half of NCAA Division I teams this year. They have a record of 9-16 and are ranked 209th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the eight schools in the Ivy League (average ranking 208.5), they're currently ranked as our #6 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, Dartmouth will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 100 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #155 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Although they have a capable defense, Dartmouth doesn't stand out in any one particular area on that end of the court, and they fall outside the top-100 in every one of the defensive categories we take into consideration for this analysis.
Dartmouth doesn't perform as well offensively as they do defensively. The team is ranked 255th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 96 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Dartmouth struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 31.4% of their mid-range jumpers (ninth from the bottom in the nation), 53.8% of their near-proximity chances (312th), and 39.9% of their total shots from the field (325th) vs. AO. Dartmouth also struggles to draw fouls and earn opportunities at the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.32 vs. AO, they are 319th in the overall rankings for that category. If Dartmouth does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 77.0% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #23 in Division I.
Dartmouth has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked seventh in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Dartmouth does better vs. clubs that favor a faster tempo. When playing squads that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.52, Dartmouth performs above average 69% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 13% of the time.
Dartmouth performs better against squads that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 11.76, Dartmouth is more efficient than normal 69% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 13% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, Dartmouth usually performs better than average. Dartmouth is more efficient than normal 69% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 9.03. In all other contests, Dartmouth performs better than average 13% of the time.
