ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Nebraska should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. They have a record of 7-20 and are ranked 110th overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 42.1). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.820 (the fourth-highest in the country), Nebraska has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Nebraska has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #49 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 93 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Nebraska does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 19th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.2% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, this team will force AO to shoot the three more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (43.5%) will come from long-distance. Nebraska also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #35 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.9% of their total attempts from the floor.
The offense for Nebraska, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 189th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 99 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Nebraska has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 62.5% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #346 overall in free throw percentage. If Nebraska does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 42.4% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 41st in the NCAA.
Nebraska has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #31 ranking in positive momentum. On the road, Nebraska performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 333rd in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Nebraska does better vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.85%, Nebraska performs above average 77% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
Nebraska performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.31%, Nebraska is more efficient than normal 22% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 65% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, Nebraska usually performs better than average. Nebraska is more efficient than normal 78% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 11.44. In all other contests, Nebraska performs better than average 35% of the time.
