ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Saint Louis should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Ranked 149th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 17-16. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 152.0), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Saint Louis has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #93 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings and preferring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 22nd-slowest pace in D1), they will allow about 98 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Saint Louis does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 16th in the NCAA). Saint Louis has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 56th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 56.1% of their attempts from close-up.
The offense for Saint Louis, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 234th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Saint Louis is downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked third from the bottom in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 29.9% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. Saint Louis also has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 64.7% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #343 overall in free throw percentage. If Saint Louis does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 33.36 vs. AO, which ranks fourth in the country.
When playing on the road, Saint Louis performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 325th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Saint Louis performs worse against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 70.18, Saint Louis is more efficient than normal 25% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 80% of the time.
When playing teams that allow more chances at the line, Saint Louis usually performs worse than average. Saint Louis is more efficient than normal 43% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.09. In all other contests, Saint Louis performs better than average 91% of the time.
Saint Louis is typically better vs. teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. Against foes that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.65, Saint Louis performs above their norm 73% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 30% of the time.
