ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Saint Louis should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Ranked 227th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 11-21. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 117.6), they're currently ranked as our #13 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, Saint Louis will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 101 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #143 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Saint Louis does a fairly satisfactory job to deny opponents chances to score off of the offensive glass. They have a rating of 13.10 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 54th in the country). Saint Louis also has been doing fairly decent work to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 58th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 78.90 vs. AO.
Unfortunately, Saint Louis is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 297th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 94 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Saint Louis happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 339th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 77.29 vs. AO. Saint Louis also does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 4.2% of all second-chance opportunities (335th nationally), and with a rating of 10.63, they're 334th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well.
Saint Louis has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #32 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Saint Louis performs better against squads that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 83.29, Saint Louis is more efficient than normal 82% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 38% of the time.
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Saint Louis usually performs worse than average. Saint Louis is more efficient than normal 37% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.73%. In all other contests, Saint Louis performs better than average 77% of the time.
Saint Louis is typically better vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 69.83%, Saint Louis performs above their norm 75% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 40% of the time.
