ANALYSIS: Michigan is one of the most elite and successful teams in college basketball this year. Their record this season is 23-5, and the club is ranked third overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 42.1).
Michigan showcases one of the country's most efficient offenses. Racking up about 117 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the team is nationally rated fifth in efficiency on that end of the floor. Michigan is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. They make 40.1% of their three-pointers (third in the nation), 42.3% of their mid-range jumpers (42nd), 67.0% of their near-proximity chances (ninth), and 50.9% of their total shots from the field (third) vs. AO. Michigan is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.1% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 19th nationally in free throw percentage. Michigan lastly does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 20th nationally).
Compounding opponents' problems, Michigan is as dominant on the defensive end of the floor as they are on the offensive side of things. The team ranks fifth nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 87 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Michigan will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.6% of their three-pointers (26th in the nation), 30.6% of their mid-range shots (fifth), 52.3% of their near-proximity attempts (16th), and 37.4% of their total shots from the field (second). Michigan is also a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 17.99 vs. AO, they are currently rated fifth in the country in that category. Michigan lastly does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 15th in the NCAA). If Michigan does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 87.19 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 15th-worst in college basketball.
Michigan has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 330th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, Michigan performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 312th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that favor a faster tempo, Michigan usually performs worse than average. Michigan is more efficient than normal 11% of the time when facing clubs that have a pace vs. AO greater than 71.12. In all other contests, Michigan performs better than average 74% of the time.
Michigan is typically better vs. teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint. Against foes that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.83%, Michigan performs above their norm 70% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 13% of the time.
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Michigan often performs worse than normal. Michigan is more efficient than usual 22% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.03%. In their other contests, Michigan performs better than the norm 68% of the time.
