ANALYSIS: A top-25 caliber team, Michigan will almost certainly present a challenging task for any Division I opponent. Carrying a record of 26-12, they are currently rated #18 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 55.9), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.745 (the 25th-highest in the country), Michigan has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
With a style of play that will try to grind things to a crawl (the eighth-slowest pace in D1), Michigan is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated fifth in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 120 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Michigan is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. While hitting from inside is their primary strength (72.4% from near-proximity vs. AO, first in the country), the team also converts 39.6% of their three-pointers (18th), 44.0% of their mid-range jumpers (second), and 50.4% of their total shots from the field (sixth) vs. AO. Michigan also allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 7.50, which ranks #4 in the country. Michigan is lastly deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 77.5% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 12th nationally in free throw percentage. If Michigan does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 11.72 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 44th-worst in college hoops.
Michigan plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 54th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 95 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Michigan is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.26 vs. AO, they are currently rated 13th in the country in that category.
Michigan has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked tenth from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Michigan does better vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.81%, Michigan performs above average 56% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 13% of the time.
Michigan performs better against squads that convert well from outside the arc. When facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.53%, Michigan is more efficient than normal 52% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 15% of the time.
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Michigan usually performs worse than average. Michigan is more efficient than normal 17% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 29.01. In all other contests, Michigan performs better than average 50% of the time.
