ANALYSIS: Michigan State is among the very best of the best in NCAA hoops this year. Ranked third overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 32-7. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.2), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.803 (the fourth-highest in the country), Michigan State has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Michigan State will create problems for opponents with their extremely prolific offense. Scoring roughly 122 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the squad is rated #4 in offensive efficiency. Michigan State is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. They make 38.8% of their three-pointers (12th in the nation), 42.6% of their mid-range jumpers (seventh), 67.8% of their near-proximity chances (ninth), and 50.4% of their total shots from the field (fourth) vs. AO. Michigan State is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 77.6% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked tenth nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-50 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 29.82 vs. AO.
The frightening part is that Michigan State is nearly as powerful on the defensive end of the floor as they are on the offensive side of things. The team ranks sixth nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Michigan State will wreak havoc with many opponents' shooting percentages this year. And it doesn't really matter where the shots originate; the team ranks in the top-25 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. While their best work on defense is done near the bucket (allowing 47.9% shooting from near-proximity locations vs. AO, best in the nation), the team also pesters AO into converting just 30.0% of their three-pointers (13th), 29.6% of their mid-range field goals (eighth), and 36.3% of their total shots from the field (second). Michigan State also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 14th in the NCAA). Michigan State is lastly a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.49 vs. AO, they are currently rated 19th in the country in that category. If Michigan State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.11 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 14th-worst in college basketball.
When playing on the road, Michigan State performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 321st in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Michigan State is typically better vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.94, Michigan State performs above their norm 86% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 28% of the time.
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Michigan State often performs better than normal. Michigan State is more efficient than usual 77% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.20%. In their other contests, Michigan State performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
Michigan State does worse vs. clubs that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.98, Michigan State performs above average 37% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 75% of the time.
