ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Towson, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. They have a record of 20-13 and are ranked 138th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Colonial (average ranking 173.3), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
Towson will likely call on their defense to win a majority of their games. The team is ranked 115th in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Towson has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 17th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 76.72 vs. AO. Towson also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 20th in the NCAA). If Towson does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's tendency to send opponents to the line too much by fouling. The squad has a rating of 33.67 in defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 14th-worst in the country.
Towson plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 165th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 102 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Towson does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 10.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked second nationally), and with a rating of 21.42, they're third in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. Towson also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 33.91 vs. AO, they are ranked fifth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 68.2% of their attempts. If Towson does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's ability (or lack thereof) to sink threes. The squad converts just 31.7% of their three-point attempts vs. AO, which ranks 40th-worst in the nation.
Towson is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 15th in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Towson performs worse against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.13%, Towson is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 70% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, Towson usually performs worse than average. Towson is more efficient than normal 20% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.38. In all other contests, Towson performs better than average 59% of the time.
Towson is typically worse vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 70.66, Towson performs above their norm 17% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 55% of the time.
