ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Towson likely fits the bill. They are ranked #273 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 12-20. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 10) in the Colonial (average ranking 207.0).
Towson is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #262 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Towson has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 62.3% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #342 overall in free throw percentage. Towson also won't provide opponents much of a scare with their shooting percentage from the inside. The team is ranked 306th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 53.2% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. If Towson does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 25.13 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks first in all of college hoops.
Towson doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 105 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #260 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Towson is extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #340 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.80 vs. AO. Towson also fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 35.03 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #331 in the country in that category.
When playing on the road, Towson has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 13th in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Towson does better vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.01%, Towson performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
Towson performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.38%, Towson is more efficient than normal 22% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 59% of the time.
