ANALYSIS: If you see UMass on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. They have a record of 13-20 and are ranked 179th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 152.0), they're currently ranked as our #10 team in the conference.
UMass will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 137th in offensive efficiency and scores more than 103 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UMass is one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 31st nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 39.1% of their attempts from there vs. AO. UMass also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 76.4% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 39th nationally in free throw percentage. Though they typically convert their shots from the line, the downside is that they hardly ever manage to get there. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 20.45 vs. AO (12th-worst in the nation).
The defense for UMass, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 266th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UMass gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 8.5% of all second-chance opportunities (308th nationally).
UMass has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 311th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, UMass performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 311th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that prefer the outside shot, UMass often performs better than normal. UMass is more efficient than usual 61% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.03. In their other contests, UMass performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
UMass does worse vs. clubs that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 11.70, UMass performs above average 20% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 61% of the time.
