ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, Harvard is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Carrying a record of 19-12, they are currently rated #111 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the eight schools in the Ivy League (average ranking 158.3), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
Harvard will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 90th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 100 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Harvard is one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 40th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 11.87, they're 45th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
Harvard is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 141st nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 105 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Harvard will make a concerted effort to fire off quite a few three-pointers each game. The team ranks 35th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to shoot from long, they have the ability to punish you for it, too. Ranked in the top-75 in three-point shooting percentage, they make approximately 36.8% of their three-point attempts vs. AO. If Harvard does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 79.49 vs. AO, which ranks 34th-worst in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, Harvard often performs better than normal. Harvard is more efficient than usual 83% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.50%. In their other contests, Harvard performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
Harvard does worse vs. clubs that prefer the outside shot. When playing squads that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.04, Harvard performs above average 25% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 83% of the time.
Harvard performs worse against squads that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.60%, Harvard is more efficient than normal 31% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 82% of the time.
