ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, Harvard is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Carrying a record of 22-8, they are currently rated #94 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the eight schools in the Ivy League (average ranking 183.0), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
Demonstrating a preference for a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 23rd-slowest pace in D1), Harvard will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 67th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 96 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Harvard does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked 24th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 52.5% of their attempts from close-up. Harvard also does a fairly satisfactory job to deny opponents chances to score off of the offensive glass. They have a rating of 13.63 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 63rd in the country).
Harvard is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 154th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Harvard favors the mid-range jumper over any of the others. The club is ranked 28th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those mid-range shots goes, the team shoots a mediocre 35.2% vs. AO. Harvard also acquires a fair amount of chances from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 31.65 vs. AO, they are ranked 63rd in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. In addition, the team is in the top-100 in free throw shooting, converting a solid 71.5% of their attempts. If Harvard does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of just 5.1% vs. AO, which ranks 44th-worst in the nation.
Harvard has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 333rd overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Harvard often performs better than normal. Harvard is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.36. In their other contests, Harvard performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
Harvard does better vs. clubs that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.03%, Harvard performs above average 82% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 41% of the time.
Harvard performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.69%, Harvard is more efficient than normal 80% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 44% of the time.
