ANALYSIS: As one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball, Holy Cross should be a pushover for the average-to-good squads in Division I. They have a record of 9-22 and are ranked sixth from the bottom overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Patriot League (average ranking 275.3), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.270 (which ranks 339th in the nation), Holy Cross has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Offense comes as a real struggle to Holy Cross this year. The team is rated tenth from the bottom in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 89 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Holy Cross shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 30.4% of their mid-range jumpers (fourth from the bottom in the nation), 50.9% of their near-proximity chances (346th), and 38.5% of their total shots from the field (348th) vs. AO. Holy Cross also has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 12.98, which ranks 310th in D1.
Holy Cross doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 110 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #330 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Holy Cross is one of the very worst teams in the country in terms of overall defensive field goal percentage. The ball-club ranks #347 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 48.1% of their total attempts from the floor. Holy Cross also does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 334th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.2% of their attempts from afar. Luckily, AO will take nowhere near as many threes as they typically would, and only 31.5% of AO's field goal attempts will come from downtown.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Holy Cross performs better against squads that prefer the outside shot. When facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.05, Holy Cross is more efficient than normal 67% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 27% of the time.
When playing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Holy Cross usually performs better than average. Holy Cross is more efficient than normal 78% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.01%. In all other contests, Holy Cross performs better than average 40% of the time.
