ANALYSIS: There are very few Division I teams that are as bad as Holy Cross is this year. Carrying a record of 3-29, they are currently rated #346 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the Patriot League (average ranking 253.8).
Holy Cross has one of the most inept defenses in the NCAA. Allowing about 114 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they're ranked way down at #347 in defensive efficiency. Holy Cross is extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #353 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 6.17 vs. AO. Holy Cross also allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 38.3% of their three-pointers (seventh from the bottom in the nation), 41.7% of their mid-range chances (323rd), and 49.4% of their total shots from the field (sixth from the bottom).
Holy Cross doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 91 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #307 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Holy Cross tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 15.19, which ranks third from the bottom in D1. Holy Cross also does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.45 vs. AO, they are 331st in the overall rankings for that category.
Holy Cross has been playing some of their worst basketball of the season as of late, and they're presently ranked 332nd in positive momentum because of it. Holy Cross has also been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 319th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, Holy Cross has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked first in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that prefer the outside shot, Holy Cross usually performs worse than average. Holy Cross is more efficient than normal 41% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.03. In all other contests, Holy Cross performs better than average 79% of the time.
Holy Cross is typically better vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.90, Holy Cross performs above their norm 68% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Holy Cross often performs worse than normal. Holy Cross is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 84.38. In their other contests, Holy Cross performs better than the norm 68% of the time.
