ANALYSIS: LSU has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. Carrying a record of 21-10, they are currently rated #39 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 14) in the SEC (average ranking 67.6).
LSU is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated eighth in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 113 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. LSU does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked tenth nationally), and with a rating of 16.26, they're 40th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. LSU is also a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 42.1% of their mid-range jumpers (16th in the nation), 64.8% of their near-proximity chances (25th), and 47.8% of their total shots from the field (12th) vs. AO. LSU is lastly one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 20th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.86 vs. AO.
Though they're not quite as efficient defensively as they are offensively, LSU still does OK when the opposition has possession of the ball. The team ranks 157th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. LSU has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 28th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.7% of their attempts from that distance. LSU also does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.13 vs. AO, they are currently rated 34th in the country in that category. If LSU does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 86.12 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 22nd-worst in college basketball.
LSU is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 26th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
LSU does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.33%, LSU performs above average 26% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 83% of the time.
LSU performs better against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.30, LSU is more efficient than normal 65% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 18% of the time.
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, LSU usually performs better than average. LSU is more efficient than normal 80% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.58%. In all other contests, LSU performs better than average 33% of the time.
