ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Murray State should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Carrying a record of 17-14, they are currently rated #165 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 12 schools in the OVC (average ranking 219.1), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
With a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 23rd-slowest pace in D1), Murray State will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 146th in offensive efficiency and scores more than 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Murray State does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.97, which ranks #35 in the country. If Murray State does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining and converting second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of just 5.2% vs. AO, which ranks 44th-worst in the nation.
Murray State is not quite as good on the defensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 195th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Murray State hasn't done terribly well defending the mid-range jumper. The squad is ranked 293rd nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 38.6% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. If Murray State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 77.86 vs. AO, which ranks 30th-best in college basketball.
Murray State has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #39 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Murray State does worse vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.45%, Murray State performs above average 42% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 90% of the time.
Murray State performs worse against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.77%, Murray State is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 74% of the time.
