ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, UIC should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. Ranked 288th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 10-24. Of the nine schools in the Horizon League (average ranking 173.2), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
UIC does not provide much of a challenge on defense. They are ranked at #292 in efficiency on that end of the court and give up about 107 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. UIC allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 39.3% of their three-pointers (sixth from the bottom in the nation), 39.8% of their mid-range chances (325th), and 47.5% of their total shots from the field (326th).
UIC doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 96 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #253 in the nation in offensive efficiency. UIC struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 31.6% of their mid-range jumpers (314th in the nation), 51.5% of their near-proximity chances (326th), and 38.0% of their total shots from the field (333rd) vs. AO. If UIC does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 74.0% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #46 in Division I.
UIC is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 17th in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UIC is typically better vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 30.58, UIC performs above their norm 80% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 36% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, UIC often performs worse than normal. UIC is more efficient than usual 36% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.44. In their other contests, UIC performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
UIC does worse vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.17%, UIC performs above average 33% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 71% of the time.
