ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Northwestern is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Carrying a record of 9-15, they are currently rated #89 overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 42.1), they're currently ranked as our #13 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.807 (which ranks ninth nationally), Northwestern is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Northwestern has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #48 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 93 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Northwestern has had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #57 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.0% of their total attempts from the floor. Northwestern also makes a point to avoid fouls and prevent opponents from getting to the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.88 vs. AO, they are currently rated 70th in the country in that category.
Northwestern is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 121st nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 102 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Northwestern is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 13th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 66.5% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. However, even with their high conversion rate on near-proximity attempts, this team usually settles for shots from longer distances. Only about 28.9% of their total attempts vs. AO are from the inside. Northwestern has also been fairly successful when shooting from the field. The squad is ranked 60th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 46.2% of their attempts vs. AO. If Northwestern does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.86 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 38th-worst in college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

Against foes that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 83.27, Northwestern performs above their norm 20% of the time. In their other contests, Northwestern performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
