ANALYSIS: Northwestern is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. Their record this season is 24-12, and the club is ranked 33rd overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 55.9).
Northwestern has been a force on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 24th in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 93 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Northwestern does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.3% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked ninth in the NCAA). Northwestern will also put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. Though they're most successful defending the mid-range jumper (allowing 31.6% shooting in that category vs. AO, 14th in the country), the team also hassles AO into converting just 31.8% of their three-pointers (27th), 53.6% of their near-proximity chances (38th), and 38.7% of their total shots from the field (15th).
Northwestern plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 46th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Northwestern is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 22nd in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.63 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-100 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 45.7% of their total attempts vs. AO. Northwestern also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 75.5% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 36th nationally in free throw percentage.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Northwestern performs better against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.48, Northwestern is more efficient than normal 67% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Northwestern usually performs better than average. Northwestern is more efficient than normal 63% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.27%. In all other contests, Northwestern performs better than average 29% of the time.
