ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Iowa State should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Carrying a record of 2-22, they are currently rated #158 overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 59.8), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.789 (which ranks 24th nationally), Iowa State is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Based on their performances this year, Iowa State will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 100 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #161 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Iowa State does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 25th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.5% of their attempts from afar. Iowa State will also look to secure a relatively healthy number of easy scoring opportunities off of steals. They're ranked 57th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.35. If Iowa State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from converting from the inside. AO will convert 65.4% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 23rd-worst in that category as a result.
Iowa State plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 175th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Iowa State is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 77.6% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 23rd nationally in free throw percentage. Though they typically convert their shots from the line, the downside is that they hardly ever manage to get there. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 18.82 vs. AO (fifth-worst in the nation). Iowa State also favors the mid-range jumper over any of the others. The club is ranked 37th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-75 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 41.0% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO. If Iowa State does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 14.06 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks 28th-worst in the college game.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 82% of the time.
