ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Iowa State should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Carrying a record of 13-18, they are currently rated #96 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 38.9), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.734 (which ranks 24th nationally), Iowa State is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Iowa State has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #77 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 108 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Iowa State is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 14th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 67.8% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. However, considering their success when shooting from the inside, this team is oddly much more likely to shoot from long-distance. Only 28.8% of the team's field goal attempts vs. AO are from up-close (the 21st-lowest percentage nationally). Iowa State also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 36th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.38 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-100 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 46.2% of their total attempts vs. AO.
Iowa State is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 140th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Iowa State does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 24th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.4% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (32.3%) will be from mid-range. Iowa State also does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.21 vs. AO, they are currently rated 38th in the country in that category. If Iowa State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 86.48 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 17th-worst in college basketball.
Iowa State has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 311th in the country in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that allow more chances at the line, Iowa State usually performs worse than average. Iowa State is more efficient than normal 35% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 22.40. In all other contests, Iowa State performs better than average 82% of the time.
Iowa State is typically better vs. teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. Against foes that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 56.48%, Iowa State performs above their norm 69% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
