ANALYSIS: A top-25 caliber adversary, Iowa State will likely be a stiff test for any team in Division I. Carrying a record of 23-12, they are currently rated #24 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 44.4), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.748 (which ranks ninth nationally), Iowa State is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Iowa State showcases one of the country's most efficient offenses. Racking up about 117 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the team is nationally rated ninth in efficiency on that end of the floor. Iowa State is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. They make 39.9% of their three-pointers (tenth in the nation), 43.5% of their mid-range jumpers (third), 68.8% of their near-proximity chances (fifth), and 51.5% of their total shots from the field (first) vs. AO. Iowa State also allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.33, which ranks #15 in the country. Iowa State is lastly one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 17th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 86.44 vs. AO. If Iowa State does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of only 23.67 vs. AO, which ranks 21st-worst in the country.
Iowa State is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 85th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 98 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Iowa State is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.69 vs. AO, they are currently rated fourth in the country in that category. Iowa State has also done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 27th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.7% of their attempts from afar. If Iowa State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 86.63 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 20th-worst in college basketball.
